A little bit different- In His Word 7-13-2026.
Today I am challenging you to pick up your Bible or Bible
App and get reading! Today Read 1 Samuel chapter 1. Then go on if you have time to. You
will find in 1 Samuel the books that tell you about two famous, three really
men in the Word.

The entire family got up early the next morning and went to
worship the Lord once more. Then they returned home to Ramah. When Elkanah
slept with Hannah, the Lord remembered her plea, and in due time she gave birth
to a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I asked the Lord for him.”
The next year Elkanah
and his family went on their annual trip to offer a sacrifice to the Lord and
to keep his vow. But Hannah did not go.
She told her husband, “Wait until the boy is weaned. Then I will take him to
the Tabernacle and leave him there with the Lord permanently.”
“Whatever you think
is best,” Elkanah agreed. “Stay here for now, and may the Lord help you keep
your promise.” So, she stayed home and nursed the boy until he was weaned.
When the child was
weaned, Hannah took him to the Tabernacle in Shiloh. They brought along a
three-year-old bull for the sacrifice and a basket of flour and some wine. After
sacrificing the bull, they brought the boy to Eli.
“Sir, do you remember me?” Hannah asked. “I am the very
woman who stood here several years ago praying to the Lord. I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he
has granted my request. 28 Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong
to the Lord his whole life.”
And they worshiped the Lord there.1 Samuel 1:19-28
The books of Samuel and David’s life.
In the Word of God there are many interesting stories but if
you never read the chapter, never read the book; you will never know them.
I don’t know about you, but when I read the Word, sometimes
I just read it for the fact that I can say to myself and God that I did. Other
times I start out that way but a character person in the Word gets me. Either their
life story pulls me in like Samuel and David’s lives did and give me a hunger
for more information about them, or someone like Ruth, or Esther pulls at my
heart strings to be a strong woman of God and do what He directs my path to do without
fear.
Today, or rather this month or so I have been reading the
books of Samuel, 1 and 2. This was because I wanted to know more about Samuel
the man of God in the series “The House of David” and the more I read, the more
I want to read. I found myself reading a chapter or two, or three before bed,
then repeating them in the morning often just to really get to understand what
was happening. Samuel was that little boy who was born after a very heartfelt
prayer by his mother, and a promise that he would be given to God and the work
He had for him. As He grew Eli the prophet or man of God as he was called by
the people, raised him. I mentioned that last week I think, but this week I
want to focus on this. Eli had sons, they grew up in the same home and served
at the altars, and in the tabernacle but they did not do it God’s way. So they
died. Harsh? Not really, they were
really desecrating the orders God had given them. Trying to do things their own
way for their own profit.
Eli knew God called Samuel, remember when God called him and
Eli told him to tell God “here I am , speak to me”?
Well, if you do not the first three chapters of 1 Samuel
will share these things go back and read it for yourself. 1 Samuel 1:1 should
give you a link to get started.
So, the young man grew up to be the ancient man who came to anoint
first Saul, king, and then David to be his successor. Of course this happens
after Saul disobeys God’s direct commands. (There sure is a lot in the Bible
about people doing this isn’t there?)
Samuel obeying God removes the anointing and then also follows
God’s direction to anoint David, who at the time was an unsuspecting shepherd
boy. Have I intrigued you yet? David also ends up talking straight to God and
obeying Him directly. He eventually messes up but you will have to go on
reading his story to find out what happens! If you read the Hub Bible daily
reads you can follow along to see the different wives David has accumulated and
why. That’s kind of interesting too!
David also messes up at times, he does things he knows he shouldn’t
have but did, then faced consequences for them. The Hub Bible gives you the
links to joining, or cross-referenced verses in these areas and often it’s a Psalm
of David that gives us direction and instruction in righteousness that He
writes in a hard time.
So why am I telling you all of this? Why point it all out?
After all this study I feel like I know the people in the
Word. I want you to feel that too!
So let’s challenge one another! Read 1 to 3 chapters a day
of the book of Samuel. Then go on to the end of 2, take notes if you have things
that you really want to know more about or that amaze you. Then msg, or email,
or facebook or Instagram what you learned about one of the people in His Word. Tell
somebody what you learned!
