Can we even know?
When will Jesus’ return happen?
So many people are seeking signs and wonders to know if its time to worry, or time to trust God that He has this world’s troubles in His time table. For that matter many are stressing over the fact that a lot of prophecies seem to be happening lately that we read about in the Bible. At least they seem like it. How can we know if this is true, I mean the happenings right now seem very close to what we are taught as the’ end times prophecy’ examples but should we be selling everything and spending our days in church praying, or
Should we be standing on a street corner with “The End Is Near” signs? What does the Bible say about signs and wonders? Where do they come in?
Well, as far as when I found the first example was with Moses at the time he met God at the Burning Bush. God gave him a sign to show the people that he had God with him via a rod that turned to a snake. God goes on to do many more signs to get Pharoh to let His people go. Does this mean we should be asking God to turn rods into snakes to show the people that Jesus is Lord an He will come again someday? Does this mean we need to be concerned at the things we think are signs?
And Moses answered and said, “But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee.”
And the Lord said unto him, “What is that in thine hand?”
And he said,” A rod.”
And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. Exodus 4:1-4
Moses knew that the people would not believe just him, or at least he thought they would. Moses doubted that he would be believed without God giving some proof. So he got it! It scared him away. I love that God used such a sharp visual, but he does not always do this. Sometimes we just have to trust that what He said in the Word is real, that He will return when He said, as He said.
Or do we stop and put our trust in God and His Word, spoken to us in the verses below?
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:35-40
HE was clarifying to the Pharisees that they had to watch what they taught, I think, but calling them out that they needed to know what they believed and to teach the truth not fallacies.
The same is true for us. We need to know what we know to teach what we know, to teach the truth we must know that it is the truth.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light! So that is a good place to start!
Let’s continue our seeking His Word and His words in Matthew 24.
I am going to insist you go back to verse 1 in your Bible here but continuing down to the point in verse 38 to 51 Jesus shares this;
For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
“Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:38-59
I chose to highlight these verses in chapter, but its all important. This portion is to give us peace. You see if we are walking the walk according to His will and His directions then we can have the peace that passes understanding no matter what happens around us. If it is the end times, or not; we are to live like there is not tomorrow! We need to live in the ready position, condition red, or as if Jesus were coming back today…every day! There is no reason not to. If a prophecy is fulfilled the Holy Spirit will make it clear to us. If there is any doubt, we are either not seeing a real fulfillment yet or we need to get our hearts right with God so that we know we are hearing or seeing what He wants us to see.
So, what can we do? We hear people yelling all kinds of fear tactics all over the internet, we hear people claiming this and that, but what do we do? Read verses 7 to 15 if nothing else, and these that I posted because it shows us , in the highlighted section up there that we need to live like there’s no tomorrow and Jesus is here, make sure we are right where He wants us, that we know Him and He knows us! It is not a given! Remember Jesus mentioned that some will stand before Him claiming al the things they did ‘in His name’ and He will say “depart from me I never knew you’ so we need to be ready. Always!
So, I say believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved, just as Paul and Silas told the jailor when the prison doors opened up and no one left! He believed and so did his household! Again, I say, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, as God who came to die in place of us so we could once again be reconciled with God Himself!
Heavenly Father, we thank you that Jesus came to save us from our sins, from our flesh, from our death. Thank you that He took the sting of death away and gave us eternal life with Him. Help us to focus on Him, in His Word today and every day and know that He knows us and we know Him. Help us to continually hide His Word in our heart that we would not sin against Him, and to live like He is coming today! In Jesus’ name, amen.
