A walk down Romans road
Romans 2- FIRST HALF OF THE CHAPTER
In Romans 2 we have a continuation of the chapter
before. In response of sorts to the list of sins mentioned and how to live
right before God we will start with the first section of verses dealing with our
judging others and how it reflects back onto us.
We try not get into that mind set, but sometimes we do. I see
someone who is being either rude, or lazy and sure enough I catch myself doing
something that could be classified as either! Be careful because it happens!
Try to catch yourself when it happens before you speak it, or dwell on it. Maybe
instead we can focus on how to either help them or behave instead in a way they
can learn the proper way to live right before God. Maybe we should also pray
for ourselves to remember not to walk in that sin as well.
As we read in Romans 2, no matter who we are there will be
trouble in our lives if we continue to do things against God's direction and
laws. It is important to obey the Word of God, not just read it.
You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just
as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be
punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very
same things. And we know that God, in
his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since you judge others
for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you
do the same things? Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient
God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness
is intended to turn you from your sin? Romans 2:1-4
But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your
sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is
coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they
have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking
after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out
his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the
truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity
for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the
Gentile. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do
good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show
favoritism., Romans 2:5-11
Who will God pour out His anger and wrath on? Why?
How can we keep ourselves from this wrath?
Can we be saved just by being good?
What happens when the Greeks, or Gentiles, keep sinning?
What happens to the Jews when they do the same?
Does God favor one over the other in respect to living
according to the Word of God? (or the Law)
What does it mean when it says the Gentiles do not have the
written law?
Why do we have to check ourselves before judging
people? Go to Matthew 7 and you will find the answer.
We cannot tell or help a friend out of sin that we
are also stuck in. The Bible uses a stick or a beam in our eyes, but you could
also use quicksand as an example. If I am stuck in quicksand I cannot help
someone else out of it, it will pull me in more. So, before we try to fix
somone elses life we need to be sure we are living right too!
Now the chapter here is focusing mostly on the Jews
because many were thinking since they were “God's Chosen People" from the
beginning of time, they were better than the Gentiles. Well, they did have the
knowledge of how to live right but in doing things in their new life in Christ,
let’s just say it made them have an extra thing to live up to! Once they
accepted Christ as Lord, they were saved but they needed to live according to
the things God had told them.
This obedient living is affirmed in the verse that
reads “To those who know to do right but does not do it, to them it is sin…"
in John 4:17
So how can we be expected to live a life according
to God’s rules?
1-
Read the Word
2-
Apply it to your life
3-
Don’t look back to the old ways but
continue on the right path.
4-
Most importantly keep the line of
communication open via prayer accepting redirection and guidance from the Holy
Spirit.
When the Gentiles sin, they will be
destroyed, even though they never had God’s
written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s
law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. For merely listening
to the law doesn’t
make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.
Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s
written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even
without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in
their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell
them they are doing right. And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming
when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life. Romans
