Bible Study questions for Chapters 15-20

Briefly go over chapter 14 and remember where we were when we last met.

Then read through chapter 15

Genesis Chapter 15:1-3 .Some time later, the Lord spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”            But Abram replied, “O Sovereign Lord, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.” Genesis Chapter 15:1-3

In Chapter 15 verses 1-3 we see that God (The Word of the Lord) came to Abram in a vision, they talk of how the Lord God would protect him, and give him descendants. Abram confronts the Lord God on His promises and questions what is up with them. He basically he wants to know why it is taking God so long.  Maybe Abram is doubting that God was really speaking to him, maybe he is just calling in His Promise notes so to speak; either way Abram is not afraid to question God’s direction and find out what God will do.

1.      Who did Abram question?

2.      What does this tell us about how we can communicate with God?

3.      Where did he take him, and why?

4.      What did Abram do that counted him as righteous? This chapter is one of the most important chapters in the Old Testament because it shows us the “establishment of the Abrahamic covenant, a covenant that ultimately is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. “In Verse 8 – Abram asked God how he is to know that it is true that he will indeed inherit all that Yahweh has told him he would.  Note that God does not get angry with Abram for looking for proof that it will be so, but that He gives him instructions to follow to assure him of what the Lord God said would come to pass.

5.      What instructions did He give Abram to follow?

6.      Also note that He gave him precise things to do, not just  “Go get a cow and cut it up” but exact directions to follow. Does God deal in precise things today? Take a few moments to think on this because it is a good example. This group of scriptures show us that it is okay to ask God to show us how we will know what we hear, or see, is true when He gives us a vision, or dream of what He plans to do in our lives, etc. We can trust that God will not give us a hard time if we ask in sincerity wanting proof that it is, certainly He and not just our active imagination working overtime!
