Romans Road Chapter 4
Eading in Romans Chpaters 4-5. We find the fact that we too have been justified by faith just as Moses and David were. See John 6:28-29 It was mentioned in Chapter 3 a bit but we see in in Chapter 4 that Paul who used some word play mentioned that the standard in which God set excluded human works, instead this law he taught about is faith driven. This was to silence the Jews who thought that they were more righteous than the because they were following the Jewish Laws. Faith is the equalizer! As we know that God is not a respecter of persons, we know that Christ justified us, made us righeous by His Crucifixion.
Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptabke to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God's way. For the scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” When people work, their wages are not a gift but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous , not because of their work but because of their faith n God who forgives sinners. David also spoke of this when he describd the happiness of those who are declared righteous wihtout working for it.
“Oh what joy for those whose disobedience isforgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what a joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”
Now is this blessing only for the Jews, or is it for the Gentiles?
Romans 4:1- 10
Read on and find the answers!
-Was Abraham counted righteous before he was circumsized?
- What was the sign that Abraham already had faith?
-Who was the spiritual father of those who have faith?
-Who was the father of those who have been circumcised?
-Did God keep His promise to Abraham?
- What did Paul use this illustration to teach us?
(See Romans 4:11-24)
- How do we become right with God?
Paul points out that Abram by faith, that means trusting God at His Word to do what He said is what made him counted as righteous. Even David, verses 7-9, believed in the One who justifies by faith. He was accounted as righteous. This is where Paul points out that the uncircumscised Moses was accounted as righteous because of the Jews belief that this was what made them so. In reality it was being obedient and removing the old man in them that kept them from obeying God and trusting Him. Moses already did this by trusting
The above verses were mentioned to prove the point. According to the Jewish Law you had to prove your point with 2or 3 witnesses. Moses and David were Paul's witnesses to Righteousness by faith.
Something to think about. Abraham became the father of many nations that God promised, and a shepherd became a king (David). Now we have a King as our Shepherd and Father God offered His Son.
Romans 4:13-19 Tell us of the promise through faith. Faith is what brings salvation and righteousness is only through it that we are found righteous. It is not by being good as I was told as a child that “Good girls go to heaven", but Faith in Jesus will bring us to the righeousness nessacary to go there.
Without faith in God's promises these two Old Testament men would not have been righeous. Again, a faithless old man decided to believe and follow God's direction to His promises. He even offered up his son to God knowing that God would make a way. (Hebrews 11)He offeres his son, and God offered His Son for us.
Read on to chapter 5 and we will finish 4and overlap the lesson with 5 next post. Look for it on Sunday.
